Columbia Gorge League Team Previews – 2015

James Baker came out firing in 2014. He finished with double figure goals and assists and many other weapons return. Diego Cortez is a prolific goalscorer, leading the state in scoring for freshmen in 2014. Ball control will improve the offense. The defense has the potential to be solid, but will they have the speed to compete with the other Eastern Washington powers? Peter Wild is a key defensive loss

After two consecutive exits before the State Tournament despite winning seasons, one must ask if TL is running in place. The Mustangs did win the Columbia Gorge League, but still need more big wins. Coach Jeff Baker has his team positioned as favorites to win the Columbia Gorge League again in 2015, but is this a state caliber team? There may be some issues on defense, but the offense, led by James Baker, will put TL in position to have a winning season and be in the mix for the State Tournament.

Preseason Ranking: 11 (State), 1 (Columbia Gorge League)

Coach: Jeff Baker

2014 Positional Rankings: Offense – 6th (State), 1st (League) – Defense – 13th (State), 2nd (League)

Key Returners:

James Baker (MF, Sr) – 26 goals, 20 assists

Despite losing key players like Kenton Cleveringa, who helped restart the Moses Lake Christian Academy soccer program, the Lions will look to reload even further in 2015. They were able to be competitive in most matches, and though questions exist in certain positions, the return of key goal scorers means that MLCA has the talent to be a contender in the two-team Columbia Gorge League.
